Dutch Talk about Thailand SaiL

Bangkok you can experience it best from a boat. Check especially the front seat, back are always tourists, for they know not that's in the din and stench of the engine's exhaust, and the full Sun Leading blow you meet the most pressing, in the fresh air.

Sailing through Bangkok is a great enjoyment. What a festive reunion with this tropical metropolis of ten million inhabitants, who live in the water, but sometimes get too much of a good thing.

Dry feet

In the central and north-eastern provinces of rice drops the water again. For weeks, twenty percent of Thailand was flooded, although tourists have little marks, because they usually go south with his dream islands.

The energetic Bangkok still largely dry feet, comes mainly from a Dutch engineer Jan Homan van der Heide.

In 1902 King took Chulalongkorn (Rama V) this engineering from Batavia to Siam to Thailand in order to bring water and who these days with Co van Kessel (thirty years in Bangkok and as renowned for his spectacular cycling) will sail down the Chao Praya river, lifeline of this giant city, can see for themselves what is currently being built concrete walls to the former capital of Thonburi, on the west side of the river and now part of large-Bangkok, to protect against the advancing water.

Warming
Thailand, with about 200,000 annual visitors our Dutch top destination in Asia, is gaining more water to process due to global warming.

But these are the tropics and Thailand may be an acceleration in economic sit here decisions are not taken in haste. The construction of a dam on the Chao Praya River 150 km north of Bangkok, January Homan 1903 to the Thai king proposed as the main part of a major irrigation project, there was only a half-century later, the same place and under the original design.

Co can say nice about how Homan, also known as "red in January was called, the first self-organized strike in Thailand when his long-time workers were paid.

And how the Dutch were already 450 years ago successfully by King Narai the Great insisted to the construction of canals the most difficult corners, away from the Chao Praya River to the former capital Ayutthaya, an important trading post for our VOC. Bangkokianen still call the old river course Klong To the detour.

Especially those old turn of the tidal river is so fascinating, because you, as it were sailing through the living room of Bangkok, you can enjoy the real Thai life.

Just past the terminus of the infamous Death Railway to Burma and the Siriraj Hospital complex, the largest hospital in 6000 doctors in the world these days, the ailing king Boemibol being nursed, there are huge locks.

There you can order on Klong. An experience of pure water, because it looks like the old river is polluted, but that's too bad: everywhere in the water grows Phak top chawa, zegmaar water hyacinth and Phak Bung, a purple IDE-type, but there's plenty of fish .

Five times around the world

Around one million in the delta city of Bangkok, an area the size of the Netherlands each year are still dozens of new channels created especially to improve water management and irrigation of rice fields, which sometimes four times a year can be harvested. In total, in Bangkok area now about 200,000 km navigable water, a distance of five times around the world.

Irrigation Projects

King Chulalongkorn of Thailand hit by a visit to Batavia, now Jakarta, so impressed by the irrigation projects engineer Jan Homan van der Heide had developed in Java, Dutch hydraulic engineer that he invited to come to Siam.

"Water King" John Homan van der Heide, who worked in Thailand from 1902 to 1909, joined after returning to the Netherlands in the 30s out of frustration with the NSB, though he had no use of Nazi crimes. After the war he was transferred to a special prison camp, where he died on November 14, 1945, almost 80 years old.

Five liners

On the Chao Praya River in Bangkok to fly, but dozens of ferries, five different liners:

Yellow flag: the speedboat, stopping only at the main staging scaffolding.

With green flag: the second is the fastest, most sails upriver, to the district in Nonthaburi Pakkret.

With orange flag: on one after seeing slowest, stops at 70 percent of (floating) staging scaffolding. The most fun for those who have all the time.

No flags: the slow-boat stops at every stop.

Blue Flag: luxury tourist boat stops at major attractions.

Floods in Thailand's northeast have killed at least four people and affected more than 100-thousand people. Thailand's interior ministry has declared regions in the northeast as disaster zones.

Four people in northeast Thailand died in flood-related incidents on Saturday night.

On Monday Thailand's interior ministry declared regions in northeast Thailand disaster zones as the worst floods in 50 years affect more than 100-thousand residents.

Hundreds of people in low lying districts in the province evacuated to higher ground on Sunday, when water flooded their living quarters.

Local media reported that train services have been suspended and some factories have been forced to close.

Local aid agencies are in place at the affected areas, while the military and police are preparing to help residents if the situation gets worse.

Thailand's meteorological department has warned of possible flash floods from torrential rain that is expected to hit the north and northeastern provinces.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva visits flood affected areas north of the capital Bangkok, after the worst floods in decades left 15 people dead.

Thailand's Prime Minister inspects flood-ravaged areas north of Bangkok on Thursday.

His visit comes after the country's worst floods in decades hit about a quarter of the country, leaving 15 people dead.

Officials estimate more than 814,000 people have been affected in 21 provinces.

The army has been called in to build sandbag dykes and to help locals evacuate to dry land.

Disaster relief packages were also handed out to flood victims -- and authorities have even sent floating toilets.

Flooding has swamped tens of thousands of acres of farmland, and damaged at least one major road.

Authorities fear that the swelling Chao Phraya river that winds through Bangkok and nearby provinces could overflow its banks in the coming week.

Officials have allocated 3.3 million dollars to disaster relief efforts.

BANGKOK: -- "Suvarnabhumi Airport"

BANGKOK: -- "Suvarnabhumi Airport", with the goal to improve its ranking in the Skytrax World's Top Ten Airports list for 2010, has developed a comprehensive series of 'service improvement strategies' in order to achieve an even higher level of satisfaction from passengers worldwide.

The airport has launched the "Airport of Smiles" campaign in an effort to "spread the smiles" throughout the entire world-class facility.

Suvarnabhumi attained the 3rd place ranking in the smarttravelasia.com readers' poll of World Airports, and was ranked as the World's 10th Best Airport in the SKYTRAX World Airport Awards for 2010. On the Airport Council International's (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) programme, it is ranked the 24th in 2009, from 41st in 2007.

Flying Officer Anirut Thanomkulbutra, general manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, said the campaign is to make the airport well known around the world as a place of smiles and hospitality where gracious and polite greetings and traditional Thai services are offered to passengers.

""Airport of Smiles" is a campaign to encourage our officers and related personnel working in the airport to provide their services with warm and sincere smiles to further improve passenger satisfaction. Suvarnabhumi Airport has a special responsibility to provide a positive initial impression of the Kingdom since we are the gateway to Thailand for millions of passengers worldwide. Before launching this important campaign, Suvarnabhumi Airport arranged workshops for more than 2,000 of our staff and related agencies to raise their awareness of the best practices in passenger service enhancement."

A new advertising campaign was launched, related to the fresh image of Suvarnabhumi as the "Airport of Smiles". These advertisements will be launched in November 2010 through local and international print media.

Anirut also emphasised that to achieve the goal, the airport needs cooperation from crucial organisations such as the Immigration Bureau, the Customs Department, airlines, outsource service providers, and King Power. The airport itself will improve services and facilities. All informational signage throughout the Airport will be presented in a new format with new theme colors in three languages: Thai, English, and Chinese. It will also increase the volume of recreational space across the airport in order to enhance passengers' overall experience and enjoyment of the facility. The airport is also installing a CUSS system, which is an automatic check-in service which makes it easy for travelers to print their boarding passes by themselves.
