เทศกาลกฐิน
" กฐิน" มีความหมายเกี่ยวข้องกันถึง ๔ ประการ คือ
๑. เป็นชื่อของกรอบไม้ อันเป็นแม่แบบสำหรับทำจีวร ซึ่งอาจเรียกว่า สะดึงก็ได้
๒. เป็นชื่อของผ้า ที่ถวายแก่สงฆ์เพื่อทำจีวร ตามแบบหรือกรอบไม้นั้น
๓. เป็นชื่อของบุญกิริยา คือการทำบุญ ในการถวายผ้ากฐินเพื่อให้สงฆ์ทำเป็นจีวร
๔. เป็นชื่อของสังฆกรรม คือกิจกรรมของสงฆ์ที่จะต้องมีการสวดประกาศขอรับความเห็นชอบ
จากที่ประชุมสงฆ์ ในการมอบผ้ากฐินให้แก่ภิกษุรูปใดรูปหนึ่ง
กฐินที่เป็นชื่อกรอบไม้
กรอบไม้แม่แบบสำหรับทำจีวร ซึ่งอาจเรียกว่าสะดึงก็ได้นั้นเนื่องจากในครั้งพุทธกาล
การทำจีวรให้มีรูปลักษณะตามที่กำหนด กระทำได้โดยยาก จึงต้องทำกรอบไม้สำเร็จรูปไว้
เพื่อเป็นอุปกรณ์สำคัญในการทำเป็นผ้านุ่งหรือผ้าห่ม หรือผ้าห่มซ้อนที่เรียกว่าจีวรเป็นส่วนรวม
ผืนใดผืนหนึ่งก็ได้ ในภาษาไทยนิยมเรียกผ้านุ่งว่า สบง ผ้าห่มว่า จีวร ผ้าห่มซ้อนว่า สังฆาฏิ
การทำผ้าโดยอาศัยแม่แบบเช่นนี้ คือทาบผ้าลงไปกับแม่แบบแล้วตัด เย็บ ย้อมทำให้เสร็จใน

การรื้อแบบไม้นี้ เรียกว่า เดาะ ฉะนั้นคำว่า กฐินเดาะหรือ เดาะกฐิน จึงหมายถึงการรื้อไม้
แม่แบบเพื่อเก็บไว้ใช้ในโอกาสหน้า
กฐินที่เป็นชื่อของผ้า
หมายถึงผ้าที่ถวายให้เป็นกฐินภายในกำหนดกาล ๑ เดือน นับตั้งแต่วันแรม ๑ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑
ถึงวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๒ ผ้าที่จะถวายนั้นจะเป็นผ้าใหม่ หรือผ้าเทียมใหม่ เช่น ผ้าฟอกสะอาด
หรือผ้าเก่า หรือผ้าบังสุกุล คือผ้าที่เขาทิ้งแล้ว และเป็นผ้าเปื้อนฝุ่นหรือผ้าตกตามร้านก็ได้
ผู้ถวายจะเป็นคฤหัสถ์ก็ได้ เป็นภิกษุหรือสามเณรก็ได้ ถวายแก่สงฆ์แล้ว ก็เป็นอันใช้ได้
กฐินที่เป็นชื่อของบุญกิริยา คือการทำบุญ
คือการถวายผ้ากฐินเป็นทานแก่พระสงฆ์ผู้จำพรรษาอยู่ในวัดใดวัดหนึ่งครบ ๓ เดือน เพื่อ
สงเคราะห์ผู้ประพฤติปฏิบัติชอบให้มีผ้านุ่ง หรือผ้าห่มใหม่ จะได้ใช้ผลัดเปลี่ยนของเก่าที่จะขาด
หรือชำรุด การทำบุญถวายผ้ากฐิน หรือที่เรียกว่า ทอดกฐิน คือทอดหรือวางผ้าลงไปแล้วกล่าว
คำถวายในท่ามกลางสงฆ์ เรียกได้ว่าเป็นกาลทานคือการถวายทานที่ทำได้เฉพาะกาล ๑ เดือน
ดังกล่าวในกฐินที่เป็นชื่อของผ้า ถ้าถวายก่อนหน้านั้น หรือหลังจากนั้นไม่เป็นกฐิน ท่านจึงถือว่าหาโอกาสทำได้ยาก
กฐินที่เป็นชื่อของสังฆกรรม
คือกิจกรรมของสงฆ์ก็จะต้องมีการสวดประกาศขอรับความเห็นชอบจากที่ประชุมสงฆ์ ในการ
มอบผ้ากฐินให้แก่ภิกษุรูปใดรูปหนึ่ง เมื่อทำจีวรสำเร็จแล้วด้วยความร่วมมือของภิกษุทั้งหลาย
ก็จะได้เป็นโอกาสให้ได้ช่วยกันทำจีวรของภิกษุรูปอื่นขยายเวลาทำจีวรได้อีก ๔ เดือน ทั้งนี้เพราะในสมัยพุทธกาล การหาผ้า การทำจีวรทำได้ยากไม่ทรงอนุญาตให้เก็บสะสมผ้าไว้เกิน ๑๐ วันแต่เมื่อได้ช่วยกันทำสังฆกรรมเรื่องกฐินแล้ว อนุญาตให้แสวงหาผ้าและเก็บผ้าไว้เป็นจีวรได้ตลอดฤดูหนาว คือจนถึงวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๔
จากข้อความข้างต้น จะเห็นว่าความหมายของคำว่า กฐินมีความเกี่ยวข้องกันทั้ง ๔ ประการ
เมื่อสงฆ์ทำสังฆกรรมเรื่องกฐินเสร็จแล้ว และประชุมกันอนุโมทนากฐิน คือแสดงความพอใจว่า
ได้กรานกฐินเสร็จแล้วก็เป็นอันเสร็จพิธี
คำว่า การกรานกฐิน คือ การลาดหรือทาบผ้าลงไปกับกรอบไม้แม่แบบ เพื่อตัดเย็บย้อมทำเป็น
จีวรผืนใดผืนหนึ่ง
คำว่า การจองกฐิน คือการแสดงความจำนงเป็นลายลักษณ์อักษร หรือด้วยวาจาต่อทางวัดว่า
จะนำกฐินมาถวาย เมื่อนั้นเมื่อนี้แล้วแต่จะตกลงกัน แต่จะต้องภายในเขต เวลา ๑ เดือน ตามที่
กำหนดในพระวินัย
คำว่า อปโลกน์กฐิน หมายถึง การที่ภิกษุรูปใดรูปหนึ่งเสนอขึ้นในที่ประชุมสงฆ์ถามความเห็น
ชอบว่าควรมีการกรานกฐินหรือไม่ เมื่อเห็นชอบร่วมกันแล้วจึงหารือกันต่อไปว่าผ้าที่ทำสำเร็จแล้วควรถวายแก่ภิกษุรูปใด การปรึกษาหารือ การเสนอความเห็นเช่นนี้เรียกว่า อปโลกน์ (อ่านว่า อะ- ปะ- โหลก) หมายถึง การช่วยกันมองดูว่าจะสมควรอย่างไร เพียงเท่านี้ยังใช้ไม่ได้ เมื่ออปโลกน์เสร็จแล้วจึงต้องสวดประกาศเป็นการสงฆ์ จึงนับเป็นสังฆกรรมเรื่องกฐินดังกล่าวไว้แล้วในตอนต้น
